I think it is important to note that i bought this item at Staple's where they were having a very good deal and got it after everything for just under $400. I was looking for a system that would be reliable and have the few key features i needed. A must have for me was under $500, a HDMI port, the full keyboard, and everything else needed to be on average with what is currently being put out. This system of course has all of those things and has performed above average in every other area.
I wanted to make clear for some of the people who might have been a little scared after reading the previous review that i have had none of the probems that user described. Out of the box the computer set up in little to no time and connected and download all the updates that it needed withing the first 2 hours. I am a big fan of XP and so i was a little nervous about Windows 7, but at this point i have found it very intuitive and i am already considering switching my other systems over to it.
I have had zero compatibily problems to this point and i have continued useing all the main programs that i use on my xp system. More than that i have been impressed with the overall look and feel of the computer.
It looks better than my last laptop that was an acer aspire and cost more than twice as much. It doesn't have that cheap feel that some laptops have and it feels solidly built. It doesn't bend or creak at all even when held by the edges.
I will and have recommended to friend and family and i think that if it is in your price range that you should take a close look at it. Keep an eye out for specials and see if you can get it cheap.

Good Value for the Price, November 2, 2009
I didn't expect to buy this. First, I *hate* white electronics (they usually look cheap and like they should carry the Fisher Price logo). Second, I know people who have had serious issues with HP laptop motherboards.
However, last week Staples had it for about two hundred bucks less than its MSRP which was about two hundred less than I expected to pay for these specs. I couldn't resist. I'm happy with the design.
First, the white is not so bad. It has a shiny "pearl" like surface, a subtle graphic design on the cover/wrist rests and black and silver trim.
This all makes it look more grown up and stylish than other white laptops. Second, compared to other laptops with these specs it's not too big or heavy. It's in-between a netbook and most full sized laptops. Also, the weight can be reduced by half a pound by swapping out the DVD drive for a dummy piece which is included. I'm overall happy with the performance and quality. Seems fast and smooth for the most part, and I'm not currently having any problems with it. But I had a couple of initial problems.
First, I had to take the first one I got back due to a stuck pixel that I couldn't unstick with any software programs. I didn't want to risk voiding the warranty with any physical methods. The second one I got was stuck-pixel-free. However, I was having serious issues playing internet video.
That was a big deal to me. I tried a live chat rep - I think he was illiterate - he kept asking for info I had already provided, completely misconstrued my problem and even when I explained it for the 3rd time, he offered completely inappropriate solutions (e.g. program specific solutions, when I had told him it was in all programs). Somewhat dubious, I finally called tech support. I got a guy who was GREAT. Granted it took us over an hour of troubleshooting, but he finally figured it out.
The issue was the wi-fi card driver. It just needed to be updated with the newest, which was posted on HP's site. So, I highly recommend checking HP's site for the latest driver updates, especially if you're having this issue.
And I agree with the other reviewer about the battery - 2 to 3 hours is what you can reasonably expect, but it depends on what you are doing.
And yes, it is very quiet. Also, I should note that I did not get the rectangular remote shown on the bottom of this page with mine.
I only got the small card one shown in the pictures up top. So, I don't think that other remote comes with it.
(EDIT: Since I posted this review, Amazon has replaced the picture of the remote, it now shows a correct remote). Just in case, I picked up Squaretrade's 3rd party extended warranty. It was a great price compared to Staples' and HP's plans. And it will protect me if this ends up being a lemon or if my dog flies into the cord and knocks it off the coffee table.

5 stars for solid value, November 7, 2009
I bought this computer on sale at a different retailer (well under four hundred), but it's still well worth the current listed price here.
At the time I bought it, I thought it had a faster processor (was looking at the wrong specs), so when I got the actual computer I was dismayed to see 1.6 GHz on the box.
Thought about taking it back, but, it was just such a good deal, and I was in a situation where I needed a computer immediately. Another disappointment was its lack of a webcam, in the picture it looks like it has one, but it's just the place where one would have been. It might seem odd to start out a 5 star review with disappointments, but this was an emergency purchase and wasn't my first choice, it was just the best thing I could afford.
However (and it's a big however), this little computer rocks very, very hard. It totally exceeded my expectations, and there aren't too many things that do that.
The Good: * It's surprisingly fast - faster than the T7200 2GHz 64bit dual core laptop it replaced. Significantly faster. * It has enough memory for most folks (unless you're like me, the mad multi-tasker, in which case, go ahead and increase it to 4GB
-- it will run all sorts of apps (dreamweaver, photoshop elements, several browsers, local web server, etc) simultaneously when running at 60 - 80% of 3836GB available (out of the 4GB) memory without getting boggy.
* The screen is bright, clear, and has decently vivid color. Watching DVDs and streaming HD video is delightful. * The keyboard is decent, and the trackpad is one of the first I've ever been able to use without missing a mouse. It's positioned perfectly, recessed just enough, and has software smart enough to recognize accidental touches vs. deliberate ones. The scroll area on the right side is nice responsive.
* Battery life is adequate, this isn't a Low Voltage processor so it's going to last 2-3 hours with moderate use and the screen dimmed (it reports 4 hours left when I unplug it, but I've never used it more than an hour unplugged -- someday i'll test it to see how long it'll last, and update this review then).
* Having the numeric keypad is such a good thing. It's a little squeezed in, so the function keys and decimal are on top instead of on the side, but it's easy enough to get used to. * Runs external monitor with no problems (but that needs to be configured in the thing called "Acer Grid" to really work right) The Hmmm...
* The pattern on the lid is supposed to be fingerprint resistant, but you can still see fingerprints. (It's still very pretty, no complaints). However, whatever they used on the keyboard frame and the trackpad is some sort of miraculous substance that you cannot tell has been touched. I've had my greasy paws resting on it for hours on end for over a week now, never wiped it clean, it's just ... clean.
* There was a little crapware to uninstall, nothing too annoying, but I feel the need to mention it, hopefully one day manufacturer's will "get it" and stop pre-installing crap entirely? Hey, a girl can dream.
* Only 2 USB ports - when I set it up at work (plugged into external monitor, with keyboard and mouse in front of the big monitor) this means I'd need a USB hub to use any other USB device. No big deal though. The Meh...
* Speakers don't rock -- but -- plugged in my old altec lansing powered speakers + subwoofer (model VS2321 if you were wondering, nothing fancy, just basic laptop speakers) and the sound watching Foo Fighters live stream was freakin' awesome.
* Last night I plugged my new Droid in to transfer music, and all the browsers got squirrely while it was plugged in. Every browser (I have 5 installed) crashed constantly while Android phone was connected. No big deal, just ... weird. In Conclusion: This is a good, solid, basic machine, at a great price -- (I paid more for my telephone after deposits, fees, taxes, etc :) -- and it's the only time I've been disappointed by the numbers in the specs but pleasantly surprised by the *actual performance
* - usually it's the other way around. It's a pleasure to type on, the trackpad is awesome, the screen is lovely, and it strikes a nice balance in size between the huge desktop-replacements and the little ultra-portables that always feel a little cramped. And Windows 7 is an awesome OS (been using it since late beta) and the release version running on a computer built for it is *sweet*.
